Book Value

(1) Of an asset: the value at which it is carried on the company’s books. (2) Of a stock or bond issue: the value of the assets available for that issue, as stated on the books, after deducting all prior liabilities. It is generally stated at so much per share or so much per $ 1,000 bond. The accepted practice excludes intangibles in computing book value, which is thus the same as “tangible asset value,” “net asset value,” or equity per share.
